| Nic Compton left an important legacy behind him when he left Classic Boat to pursue a freelance career. Following a telephone call requesting sponsorship for a new project being initiated by Classic Boat, I quickly realised that marineply.com could participate in a groundbreaking opportunity to produce the very first "all FSC" (Forest Stewardship Council) certified timber boat to be built in the UK. After much discussion about specifications and the complexities of sourcing all of the different items required from true FSC certified well managed forests, I could tell that Nic was going to be enthusiastic about this innovative project. Some compromises were to be made, for example, certified marine ply was still on the drawing board but WBP ply produced by the recently FSC certified producer Gethal Amazonas of Brazil was acceptable as it would receive an epoxy seal. Other exotic lesser known species were introduced such as - Yvyra ro hardwood from Paraguay, used for the transom. Assi Doman produced redwood from Sweden. Mahogany from Belize. English Oak from the UK Woodland Assurance scheme provided the home grown interest. You can read more of how this story unfolded in Classic Boat - June 2000 issue, and watch out for the launch which will be announced in due course. I would like to thank Nic Compton for bringing this project to marineply.com and our parent company Clarks Wood Company Ltd . Now it is up to the marine trade to decide whether it wants to take up the challenge and produce environmentally friendly boats for the future. - the Editor - "Captain". FSC is an approved trademark - "The Trademark of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) indicates that the wood used to make the product comes from a forest which has been independently evaluated as being wel managed according to strict environmental, social and economic standards." |
